The reason why virtual racing is pretty close to physical racing is the software. The main reasons why many of the race car drivers turned into sim racing is simple: First, because of the lockdown condition. Secondly, it costs way less than physical racing. And thirdly, it is a safe place for trial and error. So you can correct your mistakes. For example, you may want to test what happens if you brake later at the corner. Now, if you are racing physically and decide to brake later, you may get off the track and crash. The accident may cost you a fortune or even be fatal, while no damages occur if the same incident happens in a virtual race.

Therefore it is an opportunity for lesser-known drivers to show up their skills.
